The House on the Lynch Street Page 4
“This is a lie. Lisa can’t be her sister. Martha never met you.” It all felt like a nightmare to Tom, and he was grasping at straws to get out of it.
“We did, just not in your knowledge.” Her face was radiating with undiluted loathing.
“Just get done with it.” Sam opened his mouth of the first time.
“No, no, not you Sam. I didn’t do anything. It was an accident.” He yelled at the top of his voice despite knowing fully well that the house was miles away from the town.
“She accidentally fell in Concrete Dissolver?” Steve looked at him with disgust.
“She fell from the stairs. I couldn’t do anything.”
“You could have informed the police instead of spreading the rumor that she ran away. You didn’t leave her in peace even in death.” Edwards was still calm as if he was mentally preparing one of his subjects for the situation.
“Police would suspect me … Please, please let me go … I will go to Mexico … I promise … You will never see me again in this town.” Tom cried harder.
“He is lying, Dr. I have seen him beating Mrs. Rodgers many times. There is no way she fell from the stairs.” Sam interrupted.
“Sam, please Sam, you should be faithful to me. I gave you a job which no one else did.”
“I rather die on the street than work for a killer.”
“I didn’t kill her. I didn’t. She made me do this. She is always in my head. It’s all her fault, you see.” Tom whimpered, his energy was getting lower every passing minute.
“I am sorry, Tom.” Edwards, still somber, said in a hoarse voice. “We had passed judgment on your crime the day we found remains of Martha in your basement. Everything we did in the last few months was to make sure that you keep trusting at least one of us and don’t slip out of sight. Look at these women, they are the family of the woman you killed. I don’t want them to live fearing men for the rest of their lives. They should see justice getting served and they deserve it.”
“No, no, please no.” Tom had no energy left to convince them. His head was getting heavy, with tiny drops of cold sweat covering his body. He had never been a hopeful person in his life, and there was something about Edwards’ cold demeanor which spoke for himself that he would do what he said.
“I can’t do anything now Tom. The coffee you had earlier today contained a little invention of me. You are going to last hardly an hour, after that, your heart will betray you, just like Martha’s heart betrayed her, but I want you to experience death before you die.” Tom watched helplessly as the six silhouettes drew closer, one of them staggered, but joined even so and started throwing dirt in the pit.
His ability to speak or to struggle was gone long ago. He felt that as if all of it was happening miles away from him, but the dirt falling on his face was very real. It was all Martha’s fault. She was still pulling strings right from the grave. He hated her at that moment so badly that if she were alive, he would have killed her again. The last voice Tom heard was of Edwards’ before getting faint.
“Goodbye Tom!”
